A little over 2 weeks ago Carlton and United Breweries (CUB) sacked 50 maintenance workers and then offered them their jobs back - with 65% less pay!
Today their unions - the Electrical Trades Union of Australia, Victorian Branch and AMWU - Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union - rallied outside CUB's head office to send the company the loud and clear message that this kind of corporate thuggery is unacceptable.
Word from the company's Abbotsford brewery is that keg lines are failing in the absence of qualified, experienced maintenance workers. If this situation remains unresolved it is unlikely the company will be able to supply beer during the busy AFL finals season.
