Machinery roll at Bayswater level crossing removal points to ongoing safety concerns

Published: 14 Oct 2016

Workers were lucky to escape without major injuries when a backhoe rolled onto its side at the Bayswater Level Crossing Removal project.

The CFMEU says appropriate control measures were not in place and the incident highlights ongoing safety concerns at the site.

Despite raising safety concerns with management of Fulton Hogan and Laing O'Rourke, the primary contractors for the project, the CFMEU says little has changed.

"We believe workers are at risk due to a lack of Safe Work Method Statements and supervision that ensures those safe procedures are followed," said a spokesperson for the CFMEU.

Ongoing safety issues on the project include safe access and exit points from work areas and edge protection and handrails that prevent workers falling from heights.

CFMEU officials have reported all safety concerns to Worksafe Victoria.
